Back pressure in expansion tank and white smoke

Audi A4 1.8 Petrol
After 220,000 miles, my Audi developed back pressure in the expansion tank and white smoke. Also cylinders were trapping water so starting was poor. Thiemen, the mechanic, chucked in a bottle of a filler with copper bits, which was okay for a day but no more.
We debated doing the head gasket but there was a good chance that the engine was cracked someplace. Thiemen had heard of Steelseal but never tried it so we gave it a go. That was 14 months ago. Never did that gasket so after 7 months added another bottle and have just put in a third which, I can say with absolute confidence, will keep the car purring for another 7 months. That has got to be the most cost-effective maintenance ever. Thank you Steel Seal. Mick
