Steel Seal Head Gasket Repair

Steel Seal is a powerful liquid treatment that offers a simple DIY solution to blown head gaskets, cracked cylinder heads or blocks, freeze plug leaks and other engine cooling system leaks. Its patented formula permanently seals cracks and leaks — helping restore reliable engine performance without the need for expensive dismantling or head removal.

This all-in-one repair works on petrol and diesel engines, and is suitable for a wide range of vehicles including cars, vans, light-commercials and more. Steel Seal creates a permanent, steel like seal that can stop coolant leaks, reduce overheating risk and extend the life of your engine’s cooling and sealing system.

Key Features and Benefits

  • Permanent repair for blown head gaskets, cracked heads, engine blocks and leaking freeze plugs
  • Liquid pour-in application — no special tools or dismantling required
  • Compatible with most water cooling systems (petrol or diesel)
  • Helps stop coolant loss, prevent overheating and restore engine reliability
  • Cost effective alternative to full mechanical head gasket replacement
  • Trusted by repair shops and DIY mechanics alike for a quick, effective fix

How to Use

Ensure the engine is cool, then remove the radiator cap (or open expansion tank if applicable). Pour the recommended amount of Steel Seal directly into the cooling system. Refit the cap, start the engine and run until normal operating temperature is reached (with heater on if required), then let the engine cool. Top up with coolant if needed. Leave Steel Seal in the system — if used properly it forms a permanent seal while you continue to drive normally.

How Many Bottles Do You Need?

The amount of Steel Seal required depends on the size of your engine. Using the correct quantity is essential for achieving a full and permanent seal.

  • Engines up to 2.0 litres: 1 bottle
  • Engines 2.0 to 4.0 litres: 2 bottles
  • Engines over 4.0 litres: 3 bottles

For engines with severe symptoms or rapid coolant loss, an extra bottle may help improve results. Steel Seal is safe to remain in the system after treatment.

Ideal For

  • Owners with leaking head gaskets or cracked cylinder heads seeking a quick fix
  • Vehicles losing coolant or showing signs of overheating without major mechanical overhaul
  • Cars, vans or light commercial vehicles where head gasket replacement cost is prohibitive
  • Drivers who prefer fast DIY repairs over long garage downtime and high labour costs

Up to 2.5 Litres, 2.5 to 4.0 Litres, Over 4.0 Litres

  1. Wow head gasket went on my Corsa D 2009. Losing water, overheating and loss of power. Quotes £750 – £1200. Reviewed Steel seal and thought it was my only option. Decided to change my oil, flushed the radiator of all antifreeze. Half filled my radiator then added Steel seal then topped up with water. Started the car and waited 30 minutes. Waited till the next day and decided to try it. Oh my God. Took it a short journey. Got my power back and heating pumping beautiful hot air. Three days have gone and car starts first time and drives like a dream. Thank you Steel seal. My only options were paying £750 – £1500 or scrap the car. Now I have my car running like a dream. Thank you Steel Seal. I would recommend it to anyone. Don’t think about it, get Steel seal and extend the life of your car. I am now happily back on the road.

  2. As an owner of a workshop I have been against these type of products for years. I was wrong. My head gasket went leaking coolant to the combustion chamber while I was 200 miles from home. It was consuming about a litre of coolant every 10 minutes on idle. I followed the instructions and by the time the 30 minutes was over coolant was staying on the correct level and I was so impressed it’s been weeks and I still haven’t changed the head gasket. I will confirm these will fix what I would say is a bad head gasket failure. Perfect product. I would recommend to anyone.

  3. I have used this in two Rover v8 blocks that had cracked, and the product has worked really well and the two engines have lived for another 40k miles so far. Excellent customer service as well.

  4. As a mechanic, I always diagnose properly before recommending any product, but in suitable cases Steel Seal has proved to be a very useful solution. When we see early stage head gasket symptoms, coolant loss, light overheating or minor combustion leaks and the engine is otherwise sound, this is often a practical alternative to an immediate strip down.

Applied correctly and with the cooling system properly prepared, it does exactly what it claims. We’ve used it on several vehicles where customers weren’t ready for the cost of a full head gasket replacement, and it’s saved them significant money while restoring normal engine temperatures.

It’s not a magic fix for severely damaged engines, but in the right scenario, it’s a professional grade option that I’m comfortable using in my own workshop.

  5. I bought Steel Seal after my car started losing coolant and overheating under load. I wasn’t ready to commit to an expensive engine repair, so this felt like a sensible option to try first. The instructions were clear and the application was straightforward.

Once treated, the engine temperature stayed stable and the coolant level stopped dropping. I’ve covered a good number of miles since with no further issues. For the price, it’s a very effective solution and well worth trying before major mechanical work.

Quick answers to the most common questions about Steel Seal head gasket repair.

What is Steel Seal head gasket repair?

Steel Seal is a professional-grade head gasket repair solution designed to seal head gasket failures without dismantling the engine. It circulates through the cooling system and bonds at the point of failure during the correct heat cycle.

Does Steel Seal actually work?

Yes — when used correctly and in suitable engines. It’s designed to repair many early-stage to moderate head gasket failures where the engine is otherwise mechanically sound.

Is Steel Seal a permanent fix?

In many cases, yes. When installed correctly and used on an engine without structural damage, Steel Seal can provide a long-lasting repair.

Will Steel Seal clog my radiator or heater matrix?

No. Steel Seal contains no fibres, particles, or sodium silicate, so it will not clog radiators or heater matrices when used as directed.

What can Steel Seal not fix?

Steel Seal cannot repair cracked engine blocks, severely warped cylinder heads, or engines with major internal mechanical damage. If the engine will not run at all, a mechanical repair may be required.

Does Steel Seal work on diesel engines?

Yes. Steel Seal is suitable for both petrol and diesel engines, including many turbocharged applications.

How long does it take to work?

The full process typically takes around 1–2 hours, including draining, flushing, the heat cycle, and refilling with coolant.

Can I drive straight after using Steel Seal?

Yes, once the process is completed and coolant is refilled. It’s sensible to monitor coolant level over the next few journeys.

Not all head gasket sealers are the same. Many products rely on fillers, fibres, or chemicals that can cause long-term issues. Steel Seal is engineered differently.

How Steel Seal is different

Steel Seal is designed to chemically bond at the point of failure, rather than masking symptoms or depositing material throughout the cooling system. It activates where heat and pressure meet — exactly where the head gasket has failed.

Why fibres and fillers can be a problem

Some sealers contain fibres, metallic flakes, ceramic particles, or thickening agents. These circulate throughout the system and can increase the risk of blocked radiators or heater matrices, overheating after treatment, and expensive secondary damage. Steel Seal contains no solid particles, so it does not rely on blockage to work.

Chemical bonding vs physical blocking

Steel Seal: Bonds at the breach point, is heat-resistant, and does not harden or swell elsewhere.

Typical sealers: Often thicken coolant or deposit material throughout the system, and can harden unpredictably.

Temporary fix vs long-term solution

Some sealers are intended as a short-term “get-you-home” option. Steel Seal is designed to support a long-lasting repair when used correctly on an engine that is otherwise mechanically sound.

When other sealers might be used

Other sealers may be considered if a very short-term fix is acceptable. If you want the best chance of a proper repair without risking cooling system blockages, Steel Seal is typically the safer choice.
