How To Use Steel Seal
Steel Seal is a simple pour-in head gasket repair designed to help fix blown head gaskets, cracked heads and some block leaks without dismantling the engine. Follow the instructions below carefully for the best chance of a successful repair. Before you begin, please read this guide all the way through. Correct diagnosis, preparation and application are essential. Before You Start
1. Fix the Cause of Overheating
Head gasket failure is usually a symptom, not the root cause of the problem. If your vehicle has a cooling system fault – such as a stuck thermostat, failed water pump, blocked radiator or external leak – this must be repaired first. If the original cause of overheating is still present, even the best head gasket sealer will not provide a lasting repair.2. Check Compatibility
STEEL SEAL IS NOT COMPATIBLE WITH ALL ANTIFREEZE FORMULATIONS. Steel Seal is compatible with most standard antifreezes and also works in clean water. However, we do not recommend using Steel Seal with long-life / extended-life / OAT-type antifreeze. If in doubt, drain and refill the system with plain water for the treatment. Once the repair is complete and confirmed, you can drain the system and refill with your preferred antifreeze.3. Water in the Oil?
If coolant has entered the oil (often seen as a milky “mayonnaise” on the oil cap or dipstick) you must:- Change the oil and filter before treatment.
- Refill the engine leaving the oil level one quart (approx. 1 litre) low.
- Add the final quart / litre of oil after the Steel Seal repair process is complete and successful.
Recommended Dose
Use the correct amount of Steel Seal for your engine size:- Up to 2.5 litre engine – 1 bottle
- 2.6 to 4.0 litre engine – 2 bottles
- Over 4.0 litre engine – 3 bottles
How To Use Steel Seal – Step-by-Step
Important: Always start with a cold engine and ensure there is adequate coolant or water in the system so the heater and radiator can circulate properly.-
Step 1 – Add Steel Seal
With the engine completely cold, remove the radiator cap and pour the required amount of Steel Seal directly into the radiator. If your vehicle does not have a conventional radiator cap (common on modern systems), pour Steel Seal into the expansion / header tank instead. Replace the cap securely. -
Step 2 – Run Engine to Temperature
Turn the heater control to HOT and the fan to maximum so coolant flows through the heater matrix. Start the engine and allow the vehicle to warm up to normal operating temperature so that the thermostat opens and Steel Seal can circulate throughout the system. Once at normal temperature, let the engine idle for 30 minutes. Keep an eye on the temperature gauge and do not allow the engine to overheat. -
Step 3 – Cool, Top Up and Drive Normally
Switch off the engine and allow it to cool down completely. When cool, check and top up the coolant level with water and/or antifreeze as necessary, then refit the radiator or expansion cap. Leave Steel Seal in the system and drive the vehicle as normal. The seal will continue to cure as the engine heats and cools through normal use.
Using Steel Seal via an Expansion Tank
If your vehicle only allows access to the cooling system through an expansion / header tank:- Make sure there is enough space in the tank for Steel Seal to flow into the system.
- Steel Seal should not just sit in the plastic reservoir – it needs to be drawn into the radiator and engine.
- You may need to temporarily lower the coolant level to ensure Steel Seal is pulled into the system when the engine starts.
Flushing Previous Sealers
If you have previously tried other head gasket repair products or cooling system sealers, we recommend:- Flushing the cooling system with clean water only (no chemical flush agents).
- Disconnecting the bottom radiator hose to drain the system thoroughly.
- Refilling with fresh water before introducing Steel Seal.
Additional Directions for Back Pressure & Bubbling
If you have a lot of back pressure in the cooling system – often shown as:- Constant bubbling in the header / expansion tank, or
- Coolant being forced past the cap or out of the overflow
- Identify the Problem Cylinder (if possible) Remove spark plugs or injectors one at a time while observing the header tank. When the bubbling stops, you have located the cylinder causing the back pressure.
- Disable that Cylinder for Treatment Before starting the engine for the Steel Seal treatment, remove the spark plug or injector from the problem cylinder. If accessible, disconnect the injector wire / coil plug for that cylinder to minimise unburnt fuel entering the chamber.
- Alternative Method If you cannot pinpoint the exact cylinder, run the engine with the coolant level just covering the top of the radiator core (radiator cap off) or with the expansion cap off the bottle and the coolant level just visible. Use water only for this step.
After the Repair
Once you’ve completed the treatment and driven the vehicle for a while:- Monitor coolant level and engine temperature over the next few days.
- Check for any remaining symptoms such as white smoke, bubbling or loss of coolant.
- If water was present in the oil before treatment, change the oil and filter again once you are satisfied the repair has been successful.
